The Blossom Appeal

How your money helps

As well as funding major pieces of medical diagnosis equipment for the breast unit, we also try to fund those little extras that the NHS can’t afford that make a positive impact on the patient experience. These include:

  • Mastectomy kits: including a prosthesis and a pretty post operation bra in a pink drawstring bag.
  • Thermometers: to help patients undergoing chemotherapy to keep a close check on any infections while their immune system is low
  • Reflexology sessions:  where the application of appropriate pressure to specific points on the feet produce a beneficial effect on the organs and person’s general health and wellbeing.
  • Acupuncture: we are currently funding acupuncture therapy for North Manchester General and Oldham Royal Hospital patients at the Christie – research shows that it can be very effective at combating the side effects from chemotherapy, such as fatigue and nausea.

Better equipment

Since it began in 2000, the Blossom Appeal charity has raised over £200,000 for the breast care unit at North Manchester General Hospital, helping to fund vital equipment such as:

  • an Oesophageal Doppler (which reduces the operating time for patients undergoing more complex reconstructive surgery)
  • an ultrasound scanner to assist in the early diagnosis of breast disease; and
  • a Ventana Benchmark. This enables tissue biopsies to be analysed and the results reported on the same day as they are taken, giving patients a definite diagnosis in one visit to the out-patient’s department, rather than having to endure the anxiety of waiting for days or weeks for results.

Better facilities for patients and their families

In March 2010, we also funded the opening of a dedicated Blossom Lounge to provide breast cancer patients and their families with pleasant and comfortable surroundings in which to discuss treatments and receive counselling support, away from the usual clinical areas.

The charity also helps to pay for free complementary therapy sessions for breast cancer patients to help promote a speedier recovery and provides educational grants for members of staff from The Breast Team at the Hospital.

The Blossom Appeal is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers and its work relies entirely on the help of kind donations.
